Problems with Downloader Pro crashing at startup
If Downloader Pro displays the splash screen at startup and then crashes on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 you may need to change the Windows data execution protection settings. Please see this page for details on how to change the settings.

Trouble shooting direct connections to Canon EOS and PowerShot Cameras
Please check the following if you are having problems downloading directly from Canon EOS and PowerShot cameras via the USB interface:
1) The latest Canon USB drivers and firmware are installed for your camera (these can be downloaded from www.powershot.com).
2) Some cameras have a communications setting in the camera menus and this should be set to "Normal" not "PTP".
3) The image source in Downloader Pro's settings under the "General" tab should be set to Auto-detect or Camera.
4) Some cameras need to be set to "Play" mode and turned on before they will connect.
5) Connect the camera directly to a USB port in your computer if possible as USB hubs sometimes cause problems.
6) Use the USB cable supplied with your camera or a short USB cable as longer USB cables are less reliable.

Please note: Due to a design change by Canon it isn't possible to download directly from Canon PowerShot cameras released after August 2005. Images can still be downloaded from these cameras with Downloader Pro by using a card reader.

  3. How do I get the custom button to launch ACDSee?
  4. Does Downloader Pro work with BreezeBrowser Pro?

  6. Why can't I download directly from my new Canon PowerShot camera?

  1. Is Downloader Pro useful for both amateur and professional photographers?
Yes, amateurs find Downloader Pro helps them download and organize photographs into directories with sensible names. Professionals and enthusiasts benefit from the advanced features such as IPTC captioning, automatic embedding of color profiles and adjustment of JPEG DPI values.

  2. Is it faster to download photographs directly from the camera or using a card reader?
It is much faster to use a USB 2.0 or Firewire card reader to download your photos. e.g. an inexpensive Sandisk USB 2.0 card reader is approximately twenty times faster downloading from a 1Gb Microdrive than downloading directly from a Canon EOS 10D.

  3. How do I get the custom button to launch ACDSee?
Most applications can be launched using a command line but for some reason this doesn't work with ACDSee. To launch ACDSee from Downloader Pro's custom button you need to use a batch file. First create a batch file called C:\ACDSee.bat which contains the following:
    start ACDSee6.exe %1
Then enable the custom button in Downloader Pro's preferences and enter the command line as:
    C:\ACDSee.bat %d

  4. Does Downloader Pro work with BreezeBrowser Pro?
Yes, Downloader Pro v1.6 or later works with both BreezeBrowser and BreezeBrowser Pro. If both BreezeBrowser and BreezeBrowser Pro are installed on your PC Downloader Pro will launch BreezeBrowser Pro in preference to BreezeBrowser.
Downloader Pro v1.6 is a free upgrade to all existing Downloader Pro customers.

  5. How do I get Downloader Pro to run automatically when I insert a memory card in my card reader?
Run Downloader Pro and select "Register for AutoPlay events" from the "Events" menu. The next time you insert a memory card containing images into your card reader Windows should list Downloader Pro as one of the apps to handle the event.
Please note: AutoPlay with card readers is only available with Windows XP and Windows Vista
Downloader Pro v2 onwards automatically registers itself for AutoPlay when it is installed and will work on Windows Vista

  6. Why can't I download directly from my new Canon PowerShot camera?
Recent Canon PowerShot models (i.e. models released from 2005 onwards) only support the PTP protocol for downloading the images to a computer via a USB cable. Downloader Pro can't use PTP for downloading images because it does not allow the shooting data from images to be read from images before they are downloaded and this is vital for the way Downloader Pro works. Downloader Pro can download images directly from older Canon PowerShot models because these use Canon's own protocol for downloading images which does give full access to the shooting data of images before downloading.
Images from recent Canon PowerShot cameras still be downloaded by Downloader Pro if a card reader is used.
